Great Grandfather: William (Bill) Reed

Born:  Sept.1846, Abbeville, Abbeville County, South Carolina
Died:  November 30, 1937, Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi, age 91
Spouses:  Married my great grandmother, Sarah Partee, in 1871; Married Dora
                 Webber in 1928
Other Biographical Info:

  • Born into slavery on the Barr farm owned by Rebecca Reid Barr, widow of Dr. William H. Barr;

  • Was sold before 1860 to Rebecca Barr's nephew, Lemuel Reid, of Abbeville, South Carolina;

  • Came to Panola County, Mississippi shortly after the Civil War in 1866 with sister, Mrs. Mary Pratt, their niece, Fannie McKee, and others on a wagon train pulled by mules;

  • Hardworking farmer and landowner who owned and farmed over 300 acres of land in the Looxahoma community of Tate County, Mississippi

Great Grandmother: Sarah Partee Reed

Born:  1852, Como, Panola County, Mississippi
Died:  October 10, 1923, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee, age 71
Spouse:  Married William Reed in 1871 
Other Biographical Info:

  • Born into slavery on Squire Boone Partee's plantation near Como, Mississippi;

  • Oral history claims that she was part Cherokee Indian;

  • Died unexpectedly in 1923 while visiting her daughter in Memphis.

Born:  c. 1814, Abbeville County, South Carolina
Died:  c. 1889, Ripley, Tippah County, Mississippi, age abt. 75
Spouse:  Married Amanda Young in 1865
Other Biographical Info:

  • Born into slavery on Dr. William H. Barr's farm in Abbeville, South Carolina;

  • Was sold to James Giles who took him and three other slaves to Ripley, Mississippi in 1859. His family never saw him again;

  • Never knew that his son, William Reed, was living 60 miles away near Senatobia after the Civil War.

  • Had one son, Elijah Barr, with Amanda.  Elijah was born in 1867;

  • One of the founders of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Ripley, built in 1870.

Great-Great Grandmother: Isabella "Bella" Barr 
(research indicates that she was likely the mother of Bill Reed)

Born:  c. 1810, Abbeville County, South Carolina
Died:  after 1880, Pontotoc County, Mississippi
Spouse:  Pleasant Barr
Other Biographical Info:

  • Had several children on the Barr farm - Mariah, Frances, Elbert, William, Mary, and possibly a son named Pleasant

  • William Barr, Jr. transported her to Pontotoc County, Mississippi in 1859.

  • In 1880, she was living with nephew, Henry Clay Beckley  

Great-Great Grandmother: Polly Partee 
(mother of Sarah Reed)

Born:  c.  1833 in North Carolina or Tennessee
Died:  after 1900, Como, Panola County, Mississippi
Spouse:  ?
Other Biographical Info:

  • Was enslaved by Squire Boone Partee.  It is believed that he transported Polly to Mississippi when he and his family left Sumner County, Tennessee around 1840;

  • Was said to have been the cook on the Partee Farm during slavery.

Lewis & Fannie Barr 

(parents of Pleas Barr)

Born:  Both between 1785-1790; Fannie was born in Virginia
Died:  Lewis died in Sept. 1846 in Abbeville County, South Carolina. 
          Fannie died around 1890 in Pontotoc County, Mississippi
Other Biographical Info:

  • Both became enslaved by Dr. William H. Barr, possibly around 1810;

  • Had several children on the Barr farm:
    Glasgow Barr (c.1810-aft.1880) - sold to a local farmer and remained in Abbeville County, South Carolina after the War.
    Susan (Sue) Barr Beckley (1812-aft. 1880) - taken to Pontotoc, MS in 1859 - Her children were Sina, John, Luther, Edmond, Cannon, Louvenia, Jacob, Henry Clay, Lewis, Joseph, Patsy, & Susie Beckley.
    Pleasant (Pleas) Barr (1814-1889) - see bio above.
    Sawney Barr (1825-?) (son or grandson) - taken to Pontotoc, MS with mother and siblings

  • William Barr Jr. transported Fannie and her daughter, Sue, and son or grandson, Sawney, to Pontotoc County, Mississippi in 1859;

  • Fannie was found in the 1880 Pontotoc County census living with grandson, Rev. Jacob Beckley.  Her reported age was 100 years old in 1880.
