  • Was enslaved by John Burnett, who transported him, his parents, and siblings to Panola County, MS around 1861;

  • Became a farmer and land-owner after the War;

  • Traveled across the state building log houses with his sons;

  • Died tragically after his mule named "Jenny" kicked him in the head.

Lucy Milam Davis

Born:  May 1846, Senatobia, Tate County, Mississippi
Died:  November 17, 1927, Como, Panola County, MS, age 81
Spouse:  Married Hector Davis in 1866
Other Biographical Info:

  • Born a slave on Joseph R. Milam's farm, ten miles east of Senatobia;

  • Mother of 15 children with 10 living to adulthood.

Born:  Both born between 1815-1820 in South Carolina
Died: 
Sometime after 1880, Como, Panola County, Mississippi
Other Biographical Info:

  • Were enslaved by John Burnett & Anna Johnson Burnett in Abbeville County, South Carolina;

  • Had at least eight children, but only the names of five of them were found or known;

  • It is believed that Jack was previously enslaved by a Davis Family (possibly Ephraim Davis, neighbor to the Burnetts);

  • John Burnett took them and their children to Panola County, Mississippi around 1861, where he built a farm on the present-day Panola-Tate County line;

  • Had a nephew named Wesley Johnson, born c. 1852, who was also transported with them to MS.  According to Wesley's death certificate, his father's name was Abe Johnson.  It is uncertain if Wesley was a nephew to Jack or Flora.  Wesley & Evaline Johnson had several children:  James Johnson, Leanna Johnson, Fannie Johnson, Mattie Johnson, Mack Johnson, and Maggie Johnson.  The Johnson family lived in Panola County, Mississippi after the Civil War;

  • After the War, they changed their last name back to Davis.

Spouses:  Margaret Briscoe; Fanny (Cherokee Indian), and married Mary Love in 1881
Other Biographical Info:

  • Was enslaved by Joseph R. Milam of Tate County, MS;

  • It is believed that Joseph & Eunice Milam transported him to Mississippi in 1834 when they left Madison County, Alabama and moved to Tate County.

Great-Great-Great Grandmother: 
Margaret (Peggy) Briscoe Milam

Born:  about 1826, Tennessee (likely on the Briscoe farm in Maury County, Tennessee)
Died:  after 1900, Como, Panola County, Mississippi
Spouse:  Wade Milam (during slavery)
Other Biographical Info:

  • Became enslaved by Joseph R. Milam of Tate County, MS by 1845;

  • It is believed that she, a sister, Nancy Cole (born 1831), and a brother, Sam Milam, were previously enslaved by James Warren Briscoe or Notley Warren Briscoe, who migrated from Maury County, Tennessee to Marshall County, Mississippi in the 1840's.
